Unsung: The Best of Helmet 1991-1997 Had there not been Helmet, then a whole genre of metal wouldn’t have been born. Bands such as Godsmack, Pantera, Linkin Park, System of a Down, and a generation of nu-metalists owe their very careers to Page Hamilton’s noisy, snarling guitars, John Stanier’s scatter gun drumming, and Henry Bogdan’s nasty, assertive bass. One of the earliest bands to combine a jazz sensibility with hardcore, this New York-based band’s dedication to pairing their textured bone crushing riffs with elegant off-kilter time signatures, and well-crafted and surprisingly sensitive lyrics, like the dark ambient philosophy of “Unsung” or the ghostly imagery of “Wilma’s Rainbow,” has earned them a place in rock’s annals. Sadly underrated during their six-year tenure, these early metal fusionists carved out a niche for themselves that has never been filled after they pulled the plug in 1997. This 21-track collection, which has been digitally remastered, revives those glory years and illustrates just how groundbreaking Helmet really was. Customer Review: Classic ’90s record
I remember buying “Meantime” when I was in 10th grade. I got it on cassette, and I wore it out. There was something about it that I couldn’t put my finger on at first. Then I found out that Page Hamilton was an avant garde classical guitarist before starting Helmet. Then it all made sense. Not that the band’s music sounds ANYTHING like avant garde classical. But at the same time, I’m familiar enough with that music to catch the nuances of a talented musician.

I have to take a minute to say that if you ride a bike then you need to buy this portable pump. It’s easy to use and built sturdy. It does require
average forearm strength to steady the wheel and pump air into the tire.
My only regret is that it took me this long to research it and buy it.

This Kryptonite lock is absolutely outstanding. I did not get this good of a price on mine though as I bought it at a cycle shop. I have been using this model on just about every non-winter day for the past year-and-a-half and have had no problems whatsoever. It’s long enough to fit on most bike racks and flexible enough to get around most street signs which, in Chicago, is an occasional necessity. I used to have one of the old circle key models that people said was thief accessible with the aid of a pen cap, but there are no such worries with this one. It comes with two long keys that I keep them on two different key rings which I carry in separate pockets. Chicago is a land of bike thieves (I got two bikes stolen in 2005) but I have not had any problems with this Kryptonite model, or with hoods trying to wheel off with my bicycle, since I bought it.

This is a great CD. Almost every song is awesome. Any self-respecting rock music lover should have this CD in his or her collection. I was lucky enough to grow up in the ’90s when this CD first came out. I listen to it now and the music brings back a lot of good memories.

There are two bands I associate with one person. There is Helmet, and there is TOOL, and both were introduced to me by my friend Chris who currently plays in the LA based band My Ruin. Borrowing ”Undertow” and ”Betty” won these two bands a brand new fan. So I cannot think of either band without thinking of my friend Chris, and his great taste in music.
